    Restoration and Renewal Update
    April 2004
    Public Launch and West End

The Public Appeal for $15 million to support the Cathedral’s Restoration and Renewal was launched by the Archbishop in the presence of the Dean, the Premier and about 250 invited guests on Thursday, 1st April. The Dean outlined the vision for making the historical building a living 21st century cathedral. The Premier, in his pledge of government support, offered another million dollars, making the State’s contribution equal to that of the Commonwealth. The launch was greeted by a fanfare from the brass players of Orchestra Victoria who had already demonstrated both the range of their repertoire and the possibilities of future musical offerings in the Cathedral.

It was a splendid evening capped off with drinks and refreshments provided by Peter Rowland Catering. The challenge is to make the “present dream a future reality”. The target is already half way met: it’s now our turn to help.

Permits have now been received from Heritage Victoria and the City of Melbourne ’s Planning Department for the West End Phase of the Cathedral’s Restoration and Renewal Program. This work includes:

    • A survey of the Moorhouse Tower and Spire
    • Renewal of the Nave and Transept roof and roof plumbing
    • Restoration of the West Windows and associated masonry
    • Restoration of the tiled floor in the Narthex
    • Creation of a new public space in the West End of the Nave
    • Construction of a weatherproof entry for the Great West Door
    • Improvement of public access including a disabled ramp and a new podium.

Selected artists were invited to draw up designs for the construction of a weatherproof entry inside the Great West Doors in Flinders Street .

This will enable us to have the Great West Doors open daily without undue interference of dust, noise or glare. It will also provide a ready access for people coming from Federation Square.
