Be part of our inspiring vision The problem As with any structure of its age and size, the conservation and maintenance of St Paul's is an immense task. A major survey of the building was undertaken in April 2001. The results revealed a number of serious structural problems: cracks, loose and frail masonry and stones fallen from the spires and roofs. Make-safe works were undertaken, but it was clear that major restoration of the spires was needed, as well as substantial work on the interior, including upgrading fire safety and electrical services. The plan The first stage of our Restoration and Renewal Program focuses on the restoration of the two southern spires at the Flinders Street end. Work includes repair and replacement of damaged masonry, roof plumbing, metalwork, desalination, cleaning, plus repair of Cathedral windows and the installation of fire doors. In future stages, the interior of the Cathedral will be opened up to make it a brighter and more flexible space, while safeguarding its architectural heritage. Other plans include a visitors' Discovery Centre, increased space for our welfare programs and a museum. It is estimated that the works will take up to five years. The Cathedral will remain open throughout the restoration. Your part We have received $2.5 million from the Commonwealth Government towards the restoration of the two front spires. The complete restoration and renewal program will cost millions more. To make our vision a reality for the city of Melbourne, we need your support.
