    Update - October 2003

    The West End Phase

    From the architect

The Dean and Chapter have approved the preparation of detailed designs for the restoration of the West Windows, associated external masonry repairs and cleaning of the interior masonry walls at its meetings in May and June 2003.

The cost of this project is funded by the Community Support Fund (CSF) through the Victorian State Government and is part of the Cathedral Restoration and Renewal programme to revitalise this significant historical building within the Federation Square tourism precinct.

The beautiful Great West Window, depicting the visit of Mary to Elizabeth, the Flight to Egypt and Christ in Majesty is in urgent need of restoration (similar problems also exist with the other windows in the Narthex). To carry out this work, scaffolding needs to be erected externally and internally to allow access to the windows from both sides. The Gift Shop has been temporarily moved to the Swanston Street aisle to ensure maximum safety is provided for members of the Cathedral staff, congregations and the general public visiting the Cathedral during the period of the works.

Submissions have also been made to Heritage Victoria and the City of Melbourne for a permit to construct a new weatherproof entry for the Great West Door and to improve public access to the Cathedral (including a ramp) from Flinders Street. The work is part of the Cathedral's renewal programme and is scheduled to follow on after the anticipated completion of the restoration of the windows in March 2004.
